History of the J-Class Yacht Velsheda

Designed by Charles Ernest Nicholson and built in 1933 by Camper & Nicholsons at Gosport, Hampshire, Velsheda was commissioned by William Lawrence Stephenson, the managing director of Woolworth retail shops. She was named after his three daughters—Velma, Sheila, and Daphne—and became one of the most successful racing yachts of her time.

Between 1933 and 1936, Velsheda competed against some of the greatest J-Class yachts, including Britannia, Endeavour, and Shamrock V. She achieved remarkable success, winning over 40 races in her second season alone. With a crew of 16 to 30 sailors, she showcased cutting-edge yacht design, including aluminium masts, Terylene sails, and advanced rigging—a technological marvel of her era.

However, by 1937, she was left abandoned in a mud berth on the River Hamble and fell into disrepair. Fortunately, she was rescued in 1984 by Terry Brabant and underwent a series of refits to bring her back to sailing condition. Today, Velsheda remains one of the most iconic J-Class yachts, restored to its former glory and competing in prestigious regattas worldwide.
