The USS New Jersey, also known as the “Black Dragon” belongs to the Iowa class of battleships. She has been adorned with more battle stars than her fellow sister battleships, and is also the most decorated battleship in US history.
The USS New Jersey was built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and commissioned during World War II, where she served in the western Atlantic and Caribbean region. In 1944, she set out one her first combat operation as part of the Marshalls invasion. During this invasion, she served as the Fifth Fleet Flagship and helped sink enemy ships. Throughout the rest of 1944, she participated in raids including; the Marianas invasion, the Battle of Philippine Sea, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
Shortly after being decommissioned after World War II, she returned to serve during the Korean War in 1950. Subsequently, she was briefly recalled once more during the Vietnam War, where she supported US troops by participating in raids along the South Vietnamese coast. In 1982, she was again brought back into combat during the Lebanon Civil War.
The USS New Jersey was decommissioned in 1991, after actively serving in the fleet for 21 years. She has been preserved as a museum ship in New Jersey, since October 2001.
Making the USS New Jersey Ship Model
The construction process begins with extensive research and planning, to ensure that the ship model is replicated as accurately as possible. The ship model is then scratch-built by master craftsmen, using her original plan and photographs.
The making of this model requires hundreds of hours of work before completion and undergoes a stringent quality control process before leaving the workshop. The team of master craftsmen make use of their skills and expertise to build the hulls and bridges exclusively out of hand picked hardwoods, in order to create the structure of the ship model. The plank-on-frame technique is then employed to follow the unique curve of each ships hull. In order to create a smooth finish, the model ship is sanded and varnished, before the painting begins. An undercoat layer is added, to create a smooth and even surface. The paint is then selected and matched to the colour of the original ship. The details on this ship have been replicated using polished brass and metal finishes. Each of these processes are executed in sync with the customer’s customisation requirement or matched perfectly with the ship’s original layout. The ship model is then packaged carefully, to ensure that ensure for a smooth and safe transit to our clients.
This USS New Jersey model ship is mounted on a solid wooden base with brass name plate, and would make a stunning addition to any space.
This model is ready for display and not a kit.
