About the US Coast Guard Eagle
Constructed in Germany in 1936, the Eagle is a three-masted barque with 21,3250 square feet of sail. She was previously known as the Horst Wessel and used used Germany as a sail training ship. Since 1877, the Eagle has been acquired by the United State Coast Guard and is one of two sailing vessels actively used in the military. She is currently one of five Training Barques left in the world, providing US Academy cadets and officers with a seagoing classroom and training on sailing techniques. Each year she is deployed with cadets, with the aim of developing future United State Coast Guard officers. T
The Eagle is a sturdy tall ship, built with a hull made of steel. She also has two fill length steel decks, a platform deck and a raised forecastle and quarterdeck. These decks are also made of steel, which is encased in three-inch thick teal. The Eagle has two masts which are fully rigged with square sails and a third mast with fore-and-aft sails, which is used for manoeuvring the ship.
Apart from being a training vessel, the Eagle has also participated in several Tall ship races, even winning the race in 1976. Her support for the United State Coast Guard has earned her the nickname ‘America’s Tall Ship”, making her known to both the US and international community.
Making the US Coast Guard Eagle Ship Model
The construction process begins with extensive research and planning, to ensure that the ship model is replicated as accurately as possible. The ship model is then scratch-built by master craftsmen, using her original plan and photographs.
The making of this model requires hundreds of hours of work before completion and undergoes a stringent quality control process before leaving the workshop. The team of master craftsmen make use of their skills and expertise to build the hulls and bridges exclusively out of hand picked hardwoods, in order to create the structure of the ship model. The plank-on-frame technique is then employed to follow the unique curve of each ships hull. In order to create a smooth finish, the model ship is sanded and varnished, before the painting begins. An undercoat layer is added, to create a smooth and even surface. The paint is then selected and matched to the colour of the original ship. The details on this ship have been replicated using polished brass and metal finishes. Each of these processes are executed in sync with the customer’s customisation requirement or matched perfectly with the ship’s original layout. The ship model is then packaged carefully, to ensure that ensure for a smooth and safe transit to our clients.
This US Coast Guard Eagle model ship is mounted on a solid wooden base with brass name plate, and would make a stunning addition to any space.
This model is ready for display and not a kit.
