About the SS Norway:

The SS Norway was originally known as the SS France, and built  in 1962 by the Chantiers d’Antlantique, to serve as a luxury transatlantic ocean liner. Although she had a reputation for providing luxury voyages, her service came to an end in 1974, which marked the end of the era of ocean travel and the beginning of the use of commercial aircrafts. Fortunately, she was purchased by the Norwegian Cruise Line and successfully transformed into one of the biggest Caribbean cruise ships of her time.

Externally, the SS Norway was unique, as she was constructed with a sharper hull than most Ocean Liners. During her modification, an extra deck was added along with additional cabins. Internally, the SS Norway kept most of her features. One of her distinguishing features was her Discothèque, which overlooked the swimming pool and became a popular attraction on the cruise. Many other cruise ships could not match up to the range of amenities and facilities on board the SS Norway.

Unfortunately the SS Norway experienced a broiler explosion while in Miami, which was deemed too expensive to repair and was then retired from her service. Despite this, she is remembered by ship enthusiasts as one of the few ‘classic’ ocean liners to exist.

Making of the SS Norway Model Ship

The construction process begins with extensive research and planning, to ensure that the ship model is replicated as accurately as possible. The ship model is then scratch-built by master craftsmen, using her original plan and photographs.

The building process requires hundreds of hours of work before completion and undergoes a stringent quality control process before leaving the workshop. The team of master craftsmen make use of their skills and expertise to build the hulls and bridges exclusively out of hand picked hardwoods, in order to create the structure of the ship model. The plank-on-frame technique is then employed to follow the unique curve of each ships hull.  In order to create a smooth finish, the model ship is sanded and varnished, before the painting begins. An undercoat layer is added, to create a smooth and even surface. The paint is then selected and matched to the colour of the original ship. The details on this ship have been replicated using polished brass, metal finishes. Each of these processes are executed in sync with the customer’s customisation requirement or matched perfectly with the ship’s original layout. The ship model is then packaged carefully, to ensure that ensure for a smooth and safe transit to our clients.

As a classical ocean liner, the SS Norway model ship would elevate any space. The model looks striking once mounted on a solid wooden base with brass name plate, and would make a stunning addition for any space.

This model is not a kit and is ready for display.
