The History of the Elissa

The Elissa was built in 1877 by Alexander Hall & Co. in Aberdeen, Scotland. Named after the legendary Queen of Carthage, Elissa (also known as Dido), the ship was launched under the British flag on October 27, 1877, and began her maiden voyage with a cargo of coal bound for Brazil. Initially captained by Henry F. Watt of Liverpool, Elissa sailed across the world’s oceans for many years under British, Norwegian, and Swedish flags.

Throughout her early years, Elissa underwent several name changes, being sold to various owners and reflagged multiple times. In 1918, she was converted into a barkentine and fitted with an auxiliary engine, a transformation that marked a significant chapter in her history. Later, she was sold to Finnish interests in 1930 and reconverted into a schooner.

In 1960, Elissa was sold to Greek owners and renamed Christophoros. She continued to sail under the name Achaeos in 1967 and Pioneer in 1969. By the early 1970s, Elissa was on the brink of destruction when maritime archaeologist Peter Trockmorton, with the help of the San Francisco Maritime Museum, rescued her from Piraeus, Greece.

In 1975, the Galveston Historical Foundation purchased the Elissa, and a complete restoration was undertaken to bring the ship back to its original three-masted barque rig. Elissa made her first voyage as a restored ship in 1985, and since then, she has remained one of the oldest active sailing vessels in the world. Today, Elissa is moored at the Texas Seaport Museum in Galveston, where she continues to inspire visitors with her storied past and impressive design.
