HMS Surprise was one of the anti-aircraft frigates and part of the Mediterranean Fleet of the British Royal Navy from 1940s through to the 1960s. It was a bay class Despatch vessel in service of the Commander in Chief. During the construction of HMS Surprise, the contract’s ship building plans were changed at least twice. The ship was launched in 1945 as Gerrans Bay, but the plans were changed again. The reconstruction had the gun mounting removed from the ship to be replaced by a viewing platform and staff offices. Upon its completion in 1946, the ship was renamed Surprise.
HMS Surprise: Important Milestones
After its completion, Surprise went through sea trials, after which it set sail to Valletta, Malta.HMS Surprise returned to Portsmouth in 1952.
