Description
Handcrafted, scratch built and ready-made scale ship model of HMS Beagle (Premier Range)
The HMS Beagle ship was one of the 115 Cherokee-class brigs built by the Royal Navy between 1807 and 1830 used for antislavery patrolling and other roles. The first major voyage of the HMS Beagle was to sail to South America to chart the straits and passages of this area. She was accompanied by HMS Adventure and the voyage started in May 1826 and lasted until October 1830. Due to serious illnesses of the crew, the ship returned to Buenos Aires to prepare for the homeward journey in 1828.
Another journey was to Australia under command of Captain John Lord Stokes. The HMS Beagle conducted surveys on the western coast, southeast corner of Australia, both shores of the Bass Strait and to the north. Her work in Australia done, Beagle returned to England in 1843, after 18 years’ hard service to her nation and the world. Transferred out of the Royal Navy in 1845, Beagle ended her days as the Preventive Service’s stationary Beagle Watch Vessel. She was sold and probably broken up in 1870.
