About the Essex
The story of the Essex ship is one we all know. A whaling ship, it launched in 1799 and was a successful ship known to be a ‘lucky’ vessel. In 1820, however, it seemed this luck had run out as the ship was attacked and sunk by a Sperm Whale – only eight members of the crew were rescued.
This story inspired ‘Moby Dick’ by Herman Melville and the cinematic adaptations that followed. It truly is a story worth telling, and this model of the Essex ship certainly does that.
