Description
Colin Archer Model Boat Kit
History
The Colin Archer was a salvage vessel built in 1893 in Rekkevig, Norway. The original name of the ship was RS1 but this later changed in recognition of the designer and builder of the ship. The Colin Archer was built for the “Norwegian Society for Shipwreck Salvage”.
The boat is quite famous across the world and shares its design with 30 others of a similar type, all built in the same shipyard at Tollerodden in Larvik. The ship has a colourful past with 40 years serving as a salvage vessel before being sold in 1933 to private owners. The new owners added a small motor and in 1938 the Colin Archer crossed the Atlantic. In 1960 the wreck of the Colin Archer was found on Potomac River.
Eventually in April of 1972, the boat was acquired by the Norwegian Maritime Museum in Oslo. In cooperation with the Colin Archer Cutter Club they restored the ship to ensure its eventful history was not forgotten. Today the boat plays a part at many vintage ship gatherings across Northern Europe.
