Passenger Boats

Passenger vessel kits are built around the superstructure. Where a yacht kit is mostly hull and rig, these are mostly decks, saloons, windows, railings and deck furniture, so the build tests assembly and finishing more than planking.

Construction

Hulls are generally plank on bulkhead over a laser cut frame, or supplied moulded depending on the kit, with superstructure built up in layers from cut components. Window glazing, railings, seating, lifeboats, liferafts, funnels and mast detail come as printed, etched or cast parts. Livery is often what defines these ships, so paint and decal work carries much of the finished result.

Good subjects for radio control

The hull form is stable and there is usually space below decks for batteries and running gear, which makes passenger craft popular conversions. Where a kit supports it, the listing says so. See RC compatible models, or ready to run boats if you want to skip the build.

Finishing

Clean glazing and straight window lines make or break these models. Take care with masking and use an adhesive that will not fog clear parts, which rules out most cyanoacrylates near glazing. See adhesives and paints.

Some do. Where they do not, livery is applied with paint and masking, or custom printed transfers.
